Scarlet spread to feature ‘fuller’ model

By Rachael Gallagher

Saucy women’s monthly magazine Scarlet will feature a size 14 model in a fashion spread in its July issue as editor Sarah Hedley calls for editors to feature a range of sizes on their pages.

The spread features Louise Watts, who appeared on reality TV show Britain’s Next Top Model, and who recently lost a modelling contract because she refused to slim down.

Hedley said: ‘That’s just the sort of woman we respect at Scarlet, and we have plans to feature more ‘plus-sized’ models in future. I’d like all women’s magazine editors to feature a variety of sizes throughout their pages.

‘Our aim is to feature positive examples of all body shapes and sizes.”

Hedley’s comments come after the British Fashion Council contacted the Periodical Publishers Association to discuss its Model Health Inquiry which highlighted the use of Photoshop in magazines.

PPA director of legal and public affairs Kerry Neilson told Press Gazette any mention of a ‘code’is premature. ‘The PPA is a facilitator of discussions on behalf of our members. We are not there to pre-judge discussions or to issue dictats so some of the newspaper articles on ‘regulation of magazines’ are way off the mark.”

Condé Nast confirmed that Glamour editor Jo Elvin will be attending the talks.

Neilson said: ‘As responsible editors we have shown a willingness to take part in discussions with the British Fashion Council about the way digital enhancement is used.”
