Man United’s Ronaldo kicks off Sun libel action

By Sarah Limbrick

Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo has started a libel battle with the publishers of The Sun.

The 23-year-old midfielder complains that a story headed: ‘Text-mad Ronaldo fined £8k, Fergie’s fury on phone ban’on 13 February was defamatory.

Now he is seeking unlimited damages of more than £300,000 and an injunction banning repetition of the words at the centre of his claim.

The case has been assigned to procedural judge Master Foster, who will hear initial stages of the claim, and decide how the action should go ahead and what evidence will be needed.
