Editor Brian Asplin stepped down from the Cambs Times and Wisbech Standard last week, 44 years after starting as a trainee with the papers.
Asplin was last month awarded a lifetime achievement award for his services to local journalism at the EDF Energy East of England awards.
At the awards, Asplin’s successor as editor John Elworthy won print journalist of the year.
At Asplin’s leaving party last week, Archant editorial director for Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire Paul Richardson described him as ‘the outstanding Fenland journalist of the past half-century”.
Asplin said he would spend his retirement enjoying a less demanding lifestyle, pursuing music, reading and bird watching.
