Independent web site in December dip, Comscore shows

By Press Gazette

In its last full month before relaunching last week, The Independent website had 264,000 fewer visitors than it did in the same month in 2006, according to new figures from comScore World Metrix.

The Independent had 1.36 million visitors in December 2007, down 16 per cent from 1.63 million in 2006. All of the other major sites increased visitor figures year-on-year despite losing traffic relative to November, the firm said (see chart below).

As in November, comScore found that The Independent and The Sun Online were the only British news websites to generate more than half their visitors from inside the UK. The Sun recorded 5.4 million visits, 44 per cent of which were from outside the UK.

ComScore’s panel-based methodology generally leads to visitor estimates 40-50 per cent lower than the ABCe monthly unique user figure, which is based on audits of servers’ statistical logs. The Independent website has not yet published an ABCe certificate.
