Ofcom has appointed a former chief executive of ITN, Stewart Purvis, as its new partner for content and standards.
Purvis, who will take up the position from 3 December, is replacing Tim Suter who will be leaving Ofcom at the end of the year.
Purvis started his his broadcasting career at the BBC and then moved to ITN where he rose to become editor-in-chief and then chief executive from 1995-2003.
He won two British Academy Awards during his time as editor of Channel Four News in the early Eighties. He received a CBE for his servies to broadcast journalism in 2000.
Purvis was also News International visiting professor of broadcast media at Oxford University in 2005, and was made the first chair of television journalism in the department of journalism at City University, London in 2003.
Purvis said: ‘Ofcom has played a positive role in helping create a dynamic and responsive broadcasting industry. There is much still to do, so I look forward to joining a first-rate team and contributing to Ofcom’s important work in an area that touches so many people daily.”
