Fighting for quality news media in the digital age.

New city-wide student paper for Edinburgh

By Press Gazette

A free student newspaper covering the whole of Edinburgh is due to launch on 5 November.

The Journal

Three former journalism students have launched the 32-page fortnightly newspaper which will be written by around 50 voluntary young journalists from across the city.

The Journal, which will be printed in Berliner format at The Guardian’s printing press, is targeted at around 60,000 students in Edinburgh’s five higher education institutions – The University of Edinburgh, Napier University, Queen Margaret Edinburgh College of Art and Heriot-Watt. The title will compete with student papers from these establishments.

Three former journalism students have set the company including former editor of Fest magazine Ben Judge who is editor and former editor of the Edinburgh Student newspaper Devon Walshe who is managing director.

Walshe said: ‘We are doing something new by creating a high city quality free sheet for students.

‘The Journal is going to be student current events-focused. We intend to make a big presence. A city-wide student newspaper isn’t really something that has been done outside London.

‘Editorially we are going to have about 50 people contributing; it’s written by students for students. It’s not just your typical student newspaper hackled together by the student union; it aims to set a new benchmark for student newspapers in the UK.”

An accompanying website, journal-online.co.uk, will also be launched.
