Trinity Mirror is to keep four out of 29 journalists at the Scottish Daily Mirror, rather than just two, as proposed last month.
An additional job is likely to be saved after reporter Kris Storrar
was offered a post with the Daily Mirror in London and six production
jobs are expected to be created in London to sub the Scottish Daily
Mirror pages.
The four journalists expected to take the remaining Scottish reporting jobs are understood to be facing pay cuts.
Meanwhile,
possible industrial action threatened by journalists over cuts at
Trinity Mirror’s two Scottish national titles – the Daily Record and
Sunday Mail – has been averted.
Sufficient volunteers have been found to satisfy the company’s demand for 12 editorial redundancies.
In addition, controversial plans to shut the Record’s Aberdeen office have been shelved.
Last
month the two papers’ NUJ chapels jointly voted 146-0 to ballot for
industrial action over these issues if they were not resolved to their
satisfaction.
The latest high-profile editorial figure taking
voluntary severance from Scottish Daily Record and Sunday Mail Ltd is
director Steve Sampson, a former editor of the Scottish Sun.
The
Daily Record’s picture editor Stuart Nicol, political editor Paul
Sinclair and columnist Bob Shields have already opted for redundancy.
