It is understood that all three editors were resistant to cost-cutting plans at the regional newspaper giant.

Szecowka was given 10 minutes to clear his desk
by new Evening Post editor-in-chief Mike Norton on Monday and left to a
spontaneous round of applause from journalists in the newsroom.

He had spent nearly five years at the Bristol
Evening Post as deputy to Lowe who was replaced by Norton last month
after nine years as editor.

Szecowka has worked for four other Northcliffe
titles, the Lincolnshire Echo, Derby Evening Telegraph, Hull Daily Mail
and The Citizen, Gloucester.
He began his career with the Oxford Journal Group and also worked for
the Milton Keynes Mirror and Northamptonshire Evening Telegraph.

Steve Hall, editor of the company’s Expressand Echo in Exeter, is in
the running to succeed Norton as the new editor of the Derby Evening
