Row sparks fears of blacklisting

By Press Gazette

A group of freelances who waited months for payment from publisher
Euromoney fear they may be blacklisted by the company after they
threatened legal action over the row.

The group of four
journalists produced articles and biogs for a supplement due to be
published with Global Telecoms Business magazine in September 2004, but
when it never appeared they did not receive payment from managers, who
claimed the deal was “payment on publication”.

After threatening both to sue and to tell the trade press about the row, bosses at Euromoney eventually handed over the cash.

In
an email sent to journalist Mike Newlands in January, Euromoney
managing director Richard Ensor said: “I think there has been a genuine
misunderstanding here and I see no point in allowing the matter to
become litigious.

“However, I found your approach unattractive
and not one which would be recommended. If you retained any ambition to
work with Euromoney in the future, it was also, if I may say so,
remarkably shortsighted.”

Newlands said: “Ensor says payment
terms will be made clear in written contracts from now on. Are those
contracts going to spell out that journalists will not get paid for
their work if salesmen couldn’t sell enough ads to get a supplement off
the ground?”

Ensor did not respond to Press Gazette’s request for a comment.
