The NUJ has organised 25 meetings in 15 days at all major BBC
centres to rally support for the ballot on industrial action against
the job cuts announced by director general Mark Thompson.
A
meeting in Cardiff on Monday was attended by 250 people. NUJ general
secretary Jeremy Dear said: “These are the biggest and best-attended
meetings at the BBC for years.”
Work-to-rule action being taken
by staff at BBC News 24 is continuing into its second week. An insider
told Press Gazette the action, which includes not “acting up” without
extra pay and taking all protected holidays, was sending a message to
management about how angry people are about the job cuts.
In
Scotland, where 195 BBC jobs are to be axed, MSPs are deciding on
whether to hold an inquiry into the impact the job cuts might have on
Scotland’s creative industries.
BBC Scotland controller Ken
MacQuarrie, who was quizzed by the Scottish Enterprise and Culture
Committee at Holyrood on Tuesday, told the MSPs the cuts were
non-negotiable.
