Former Bluebells and Lloyd Cole and the Commotions bass player Lawrence Donegan is to join the Guardian as golf correspondent.
Donegan
began his journalism career at the Northern Echo in 1990 before
becoming a reporter on the Scotsman in 1991. He joined the Guardian in
1994 as a reporter and was promoted to Scotland correspondent in 1997.
Donegan
left the paper in 1998 to write a number of books including Four Iron
in the Soul and California Dreaming: A Smooth-Running, Low Mileage,
Best Priced American Adventure . Before becoming a journalist he played
bass guitar with Scottish pop group the Bluebells and later joined
Lloyd Cole and the Commotions.
Donegan takes over as Guardian golf writer from David Davies, who retired last December after 21 years at the paper.
Guardian
sports editor Ben Clissitt said: “Lawrence is an experienced reporter,
a great writer and he has a huge passion for golf. It is an enviable
combination and an exciting appointment for Guardian sport.”
On
the racing desk, Tony Paley, who has been working at the Guardian since
1997, has been promoted to racing editor following Ken Oliver’s
retirement.
Ron Cox, who won the 2004 national press challenge
for the most successful tipster, moves to a newly created role of chief
tipster and deputy racing correspondent.
