Teletext, which is owned by Daily Mail and General Trust, has decided to scrap its Teletext.co.uk news website because it showed “little potential for commercial success”.
The closure will result in up to 45 jobs losses across “design, pictures and journalist functions” from the Teletext offices in Chiswick and Glasgow. The company said about 20 of the job losses would be redundancies.
Teletext said it planned to “invest in its core activities” and “focus on its core business of digital and analogue text services, mobile services and its leading holiday proposition”.
It said: “While the website has attracted audiences of several hundred thousand monthly users, the company does not see a realistic prospect of it delivering an acceptable return.”
Teletext said it was also “reviewing the way in which news and sport is delivered for Scottish viewers”, which could mean the closure of the Scottish newsroom.
The job-cutting process is due to be concluded in August.
