Prime Minister Tony Blair sidestepped the Daily Mirror fake pictures furore when he presented the Picture Editors’ Awards on Tuesday night.
He made no reference to the row that cost Piers Morgan’s head.
Instead he went for a more emollient approach. He told the assembled photographers: “Whatever difficulties I have with you guys, in the end I quite like you.”
It was a night of triumph for The Guardian. It was named national newspaper of the year and staffer Dan Chung photographer of the year. The Scotsman was named regional newspaper of the year and The Times Saturday was newspaper magazine of the year.
Regional photographer of the year was Wattie Cheung, a freelance who works for Sunday Times Scotland. Phil Cannings, of the Newbury Weekly News, was local newspaper photographer of the year. There was a lifetime achievement award for former Mirror photographer Kent Gavin.
