Stakeknife scoop lands People prize

By Press Gazette

The editor of the Irish edition of The People- Greg Harkin – has won Scoop of the Year in Ireland’s ESB Media Awards for “Stakeknife Unmasked”.

The 11 May front-page story was an investigation into how the British Army ran a secret agent at the highest level of the IRA for 20 years.

Harkin said: “I am delighted for both myself and for my colleagues at The People in Ireland. I am particularly pleased as this is the first time we have been allowed to enter.

“I’d like to pay tribute to all of my colleagues in Dublin and Belfast, but in particular the production staff of Shane, Joe, Richard and Grania, who produced 17 pages in both editions on this story on a busy Saturday.

“I hope this award will encourage whistleblowers in every organisation where there are those who are breaking the law and usurping democracy.”
