International journalists’ groups and the supporters of change in Algeria have announced an international day of solidarity – 24 October – to highlight the growing crisis facing independent journalism in that country.
The International Federation of Journalists announced the action following an agreed declaration reached by journalists, press freedom groups and supporters in a meeting in Brussels.
The meeting decided urgent action was needed to bring the attention of the international community to a growing media crisis in Algeria during which there have been suspensions of newspapers, and arrests of publishers and journalists.
There is growing concern that independent journalism will come under attack in the run-up to national elections.
