New Daily Record editor Bruce Waddell, who takes up his post this week, is putting in place a team to help him to revive the Scottish tabloid’s ailing fortunes.
Waddell, who was editor of the Daily Record’s rival – the Scottish Sun – has hired his former number two at the Sun, Ewan Watt, as night editor.
And Sunday Mail deputy editor Bob Caldwell returns to the Daily Record as executive editor next month. He is a former deputy editor of the Daily Record. They will join deputy editor Murray Foote as Waddell’s executive team, and their first task will be to add experience to the news-gathering operation.
Deputy chief reporter Steve Smith and main writer Simon Houston, who covered the war in Iraq for the Record, are leaving in November to set up a freelance agency.
It is understood that chief reporter Anna Smith has applied for voluntary redundancy. She is planning a career in full-time writing following the recent publication of her book.
Up to 15 journalists on the Daily Record and Sunday Mail are to be offered voluntary redundancy in costcutting measures demanded by owner Trinity Mirror.
Jim Wilson, assistant news editor of the Sunday Mail, has been promoted to deputy editor following the departure of Caldwell to stablemate the Daily Record.
