Scotsman deputy poached by Independent

By Press Gazette

The Independent has poached John Mullin, deputy editor of The Scotsman, to become executive editor in charge of the day-to-day operation of the newsdesk.

Mullin, who began his career in national newspapers at The Independent as a business reporter in 1987, will also be added to the editing rota. He replaces Jason Burt, who moved to the sports department, where he is writing for both sport and news.

Mullin, 39, has been at The Scotsman for two years and before that was 10 years at The Guardian. He started in journalism on the Western Morning News.

Independent editor Simon Kelner said: “He’s got tremendous energy and ideas and will be a massive asset.”
