Motive unclear after Times reporter is shot at in Yemen

By William Turvill

Times Yemen correspondent Iona Craig was shot at in a taxi last week – and is unsure whether it was a targeted attack.

She could not confirm the identity of the shooter but said witnesses believe she was aimed at for being a foreigner.

The incident took place at around 11.35am in the centre of Yemen’s capital city Sana’a on Wednesday morning.

The bullet narrowly missed both the driver and Craig, smashing the window behind her head. She was cut by the broken shards of glass but neither Craig nor the driver were seriously injured.

“A lot of people carry guns so it could have just been a random incident,” Craig told Press Gazette.

“The initial reaction from the services who saw me when I got to the checkpoint and from the taxi driver was that I was being targeted because I was a foreigner. I can’t confirm that. I have no idea.”

Craig moved to Sana’a in October 2010 and is a former editor and managing editor of the Yemen Times. She is now a regular contributor to The Times and a freelance for other titles.
