By Dominic Ponsford

Former Daily Telegraph editor Tony Gallagher is returning to the Daily Mail as joint deputy editor.

Gallagher left the Telegraph in January after four years as editor following a shake-up by new Telegraph editor in chief Jason Seiken.

Gallagher is a former news editor and assistant editor of the Daily Mail who left the paper to become executive head of news in 2006. He was made editor of the Daily Telegraph in 2009.

Daily Mail editor Paul Dacre said: “It’s great news that Tony has decided to come back to his spiritual home. He is a highly talented professional journalist who will be a welcome addition to Associated’s team of unrivalled senior executives.”

Gallagher said: “I am delighted to be joining the Daily Mail. My huge admiration for Paul Dacre is well known and I am greatly looking forward to joining his outstanding team.”
