John Humphrys’ shorthand. Any cop?

Time to celebrate. It’s shorthand week.

So what’s that all about? Well, the National Council for the Training of Journalists says:

A week of events celebrating shorthand which takes place from Tuesday 10 November to Monday 16 November and includes the launch of a new textbook, a radio interview and fun competitions for students.

The NCTJ is campaigning to thunder home what an important part of a journalist’s armoury shorthand remains – particularly now that we all work in a more time-pressured digital age.

As such BBC Radio 4’s Today Programme ran a feature this morning reinforcing the importance of shorthand.

Kim Fletcher, chairman of the NCTJ, told the programme:

“Strangely, it’s more necessary than ever…

“If you have a shorthand note you can find the quote very quickly. You go in with a tape recorder, or a digital recorder, and if you’ve spent an hour in there with your recorder you’ve got an hour of tape to go through, that takes quite a long time.”

But can you work out what John Humphrys’ shorthand note (above) actually says?
