Lord Archer, Ron Atkinson and Sir Stirling Moss were among the names to pay tribute to former Daily Mail sports journalist Ian Wooldridge at a thanksgiving ceremony at Wellington Barracks in London on Tuesday.
The Press Gazette newspaper hall of fame inductee died in March, aged 75 after a long battle with cancer.
His widow, Sarah, three sons Kev, Simon and Max, first wife Veronica and grand-daughter Lucy turned out to remember Wooldridge, regarded as one of the greatest sports writers of his generation.
He first made his name as a cricket correspondent and he went on to cover every major sporting event – including 10 Olympic Games – for the Daily Mail, where he worked for nearly half a century.
