The appointment of Sunday Tribune managing director Jim Farrelly to the newly created post of editor-in-chief of the newspaper is causing concern among journalists.
While Farrelly has a strong journalistic background, the combining of the two roles is seen by some as conflicting with the traditional separation between commercial and editorial responsibility. Assigning Farrelly a dual role has led the NUJ to seek urgent assurances from management on the continuing editorial independence of the Dublin broadsheet.
The new editor of the Tribune is Paddy Murray, the former deputy, who succeeded Matt Cooper.
