Thelondonpaper has poached Evening Standard assistant news editor Mark Wilkinson to become news editor.
Wilkinson has been at the Associated Newspapers title for five years and has been on its staff for the last two. The former Press Association reporter has had one day’s experience of news editing thelondonpaper’s free rival London Lite.
Paul Baldwin, Wilkinson’s predecessor as news editor, is now its online editor and deputy editor Dave Brown will continue to cover as news editor while Wilkinson completes his three-month notice period.
This is the latest in a series of high-profile poachings for the News International-owned free daily.
Alexia Baracaia, then the Standard’s media reporter, joined thelondonpaper last year. Shortly after, the News International-owned paper appointed former Daily Mirror 3AM girl Eva Simpson as assistant editor in November.
Stefano Hatfield, thelondonpaper editor, said Wilkinson was ‘an experienced news editor with fine judgement and an unflappable demeanour”.
He said: ‘His appointment, coming so soon after Eva Simpson joined from the Mirror and Alexa Baracaia from the Standard, speaks volumes about our continuing ability to attract top editorial talent. He will bring a new impetus to what is already an outstanding team.”
