Newsquest in Hampshire is proposing to create a centralised subbing unit in Southampton for the Southern Daily Echo, Basingstoke Gazette series, Andover Advertiser, Hampshire Chronicle and Salisbury Journal series.
If accepted the proposals will lead to the loss of the equivalent of between eight and 10 jobs. Some 43 journalists have been told they are at risk of redundancy.
Newsquest Hampshire editor-in-chief Ian Murray said in a statement to staff that the change is part of “ongoing efficiency and streamlining initiatives within the editorial departments in Hampshire”.
He said that the company hopes the redundancies can be achieved on a voluntary basis – but reserves the right to make compulsory cuts.
The news follows cutbacks across Newsquest in recent months following the economic downturn.
