Regional daily ABCs may be worst ever

Yesterday’s ABC figures for the regional press were quite possibly the worst set of results since the Second World War.

Overall sales of regional dailies dropped eight per cent overall from a total of 3,126,756 in the six months to June 2008 to 2,868,544 in the first half of this year.

That’s a drop of eight per cent overall.

Many of the big city titles lost sales at a rate of 10 per cent or more.

The average sales drop among the UK’s regional dailies was five per cent in the second half of last year. So the rate of decline appears to have accelerated markedly since then as Britain’s regional newspapers evidently felt the effects of the recession.

Here are the sales figures for the UK’s 88 regional dailies listed alphabetically along with their percentage circulation drops:

  • Aberdeen – Evening Express 51,800 -2.5%
