Guardian Unlimited has unveiled a redesigned front page, the latest stage of its gradual redesign.
The new front page uses the full width of high-resolution screens, allowing for larger pictures. Interactive content, images, graphics and video have been given greater prominence.
The full redesign of the Guardian site, which began last November with the relaunch of the Travel section, is expected to last 18 months.
Writing on The Guardian's news blog, the site's editor, Guardian director of digital content Emily Bell, explained that the new layout allows for more flexibility so the site can move away from the "fixed story and pictures positions of more conventional sites".
Bell writes that viewers may initially find difficulties in navigating from one area of the site to another, but that it is necessary to allow for rapid changes to the site in the future.
"The days when one design or set of functionality on a website lasted for several years is gone, and our aim, with the help of our users, is to constantly improve and update the network, from the story pages to the section and network fronts," she said.
