Radio Scotland aims for lively Sunday schedule

By Press Gazette

By Hamish Mackay

BBC Radio Scotland is to boost its weekend current affairs output by launching a new, fast-paced Sunday morning news programme.

Journalists Isabel Fraser and Gary Robertson will present a 90-minute programme, Sunday Live, from 9am until 10.30am. It will provide breaking news from home and abroad, with analysis, and a heavy accent on sport.

BBC Radio Scotland is predominantly a current affairs and sports driven station and the new programme is part of a concerted drive to bring its weekend output into line with its extensive weekday coverage.

The new programme will mean that Ruth Wishart’s current 55-minute Eye to Eye news review programme will become a 30-minute slot – immediately following Sunday Live.

Eye to Eye, which has been running for six years, regularly features guest journalists dissecting the week’s news and reviewing the Sunday papers.

Wishart’s new slot will be recorded mainly on Fridays. “We will be looking for some new voices to air some of the ethical, moral and cultural issues affecting people’s lives in Scotland,” she said.

Maggie Cunningham, head of Radio Scotland, said: “Sunday is an important day for reflecting and analysing. This change allows us to bring information to our audience earlier in the day while ensuring that our commitment to religion and faith-based programming continues.”
