The publisher of the Western Mail is cutting another 14 jobs including three production journalists and two photographers.
The news comes four months after Media Wales announced it was making 22 editorial staff redundant including seven senior reporters at its weekly Celtic newspaper series.
The latest round of cuts will also see nine advertising posts go in addition to the five editorial staff.
In a statement parent company Trinity Mirror said: ‘As a result of an ongoing review of the business Media Wales has announced a number of proposed changes to its advertising department…. [and] to its editorial structure.
“These changes are expected to result in a reduction in advertising staff numbers of approximately nine …. [and] two photographers and three production staff.”
The NUJ father-of-chapel at Media Wales, Martin Shipton, told BBC Wales that the pool of photographers at the Cardiff-based company would be cut from six to four, two online producers would go and one night production team leader would be lost.
‘This is a very serious blow and members of the NUJ are extremely unhappy that these further redundancy announcements have been made so shortly after the other one,’he said.
“It does seem to indicate and confirm the difficulties facing the industry and this company. We are going to be in intensive discussions with the company about the implications of the redundancies.
“It would be very difficult to continue to provide the same level of photographic service as now.”
Last week the NUJ raised fears that the Western Mail, Wales’ only national daily newspaper, could become a weekly – a claim denied by Media Wales.
