Sun to recruit four new reporters in the North

By Andrew Pugh

The Sun is recruiting four new reporters and two photographers based in the North.

Press Gazette understands that the new recruits will work mainly on the Sunday edition of The Sun but publishers News International would not confirm this.

The move comes as rival tabloid the Daily Mirror is also looking to hire three regional reporters based in Reading, Cardiff and Liverpool.

Official ABC figures released on Friday revealed sales of The Sun Sunday dropped to an average of just over 2.4 million a week in March compare to just over 3.2 million at the end of February.

The average circulation of 2,426,894 compares with a final ABC circulation figure for the News of the World of 2,667,428 in June 2011, the month before it was closed.

Last month the former News of the World deputy editor Victoria Newton was promoted to the same position at The Sun, a position she shares with Simon Cosyns and Geoff Webster.

Trinity Mirror began recruiting for regional reporters at the Daily Mirror after announcing plans to cut up to 75 editorial jobs across the Daily Mirror, Sunday Mirror and People in February.
