The Scottish Sun walked away with the top prize of newspaper of the year at the Scottish Press Awards in Glasgow last night.
The News International tabloid was described by judges as “consistent across the board through the year”.
They said: “[It] ran a broad range of stories and had a high standard across all areas including sports, news, presentation and photography.
“It also broke more stories that got people talking, was entertaining and agenda setting.”
The paper also won awards for columnist, sports news writer and front page of the year.
The Scottish Sun’s four wins were trumped by the Scotsman, which won a total of six prizes.
The Scotsman’s executive editor and economics writer, Bill Jamieson, was named journalist of the year. He also picked up the financial journalist of the year title, in a year dominated by the global economic crisis.
His paper’s campaign on Halifax-Bank of Scotland, “Questions that Must be Answered”, took the award for campaign of the year.
Scoop of the year went to The Scotsman’s Gerri Peev for an exclusive interview with a leading Obama campaign aide who branded Hillary Clinton a “monster”.
The Herald’s sports writer Doug Gillian won a lifetime achievement award for his contribution to sports journalism.
Scottish Newspaper Society chairman Donald Martin, the editor-in-chief of the Herald Group, said: “These are challenging times for Scottish newspapers but it is heartening to see that journalistic quality remains high. The standard of entry this year was, as always, outstanding.”
