Guardian News and Media has confirmed that 19 journalists are to leave the company under a voluntary redundancy scheme taking place ahead of the paper’s move to new offices in King’s Cross, London, due to take place in nine months’ time.
The exits have come as part of a wider shake-up of GNM which will see greater integration between the two national print titles and the online operation after the move to King’s Cross.
Although the company is not planning to reduce its overall headcount, it is axing experienced journalists to enable it to recruit more staff with new media skills.
Those to have taken voluntary redundancy include veteran Manchester-based correspondent David Ward who left the paper this month after 35 years.
Editorial bosses have said they are committed to making the changes needed to create a new integrated 24/7 newsroom in King’s Cross without reducing the overall headcount.
