National press web figures: Telegraph moves to third, Guardian slips but stays top

By Dominic Ponsford

The Telegraph has leapfrogged The Times to take third place in the increasingly close-fought national press web battle.

According to ABCe, Guardian Unlimited remained the top UK newspaper website in November, with 17,499,508 unique users.

The Guardian does not reveal how many of these viewers are outside the UK. The Guardian has slipped back after achieving a record 18.41 million unique web users in October.

In second place for the second month running was the Daily Mail with 14,415,724 unique users (compared with 13.53 million users in October).

The Telegraph was just ahead of The Times in November with 12,800,627 unique users compared with The Times on 12,283,080. But inside the UK, The Times is still just ahead with 4,810,263 users over the course of the month compared with the Telegraph’s total of 4,633,859.

The Sun regained some ground compared with a poor October when traffic dropped to 9.19 million unique users because of technical issues related to a relaunch on a new platform. In November it achieved a new high of 11,608,707 users, 4,565,050 of which were in the UK.

The huge pace of growth in UK news websites was illustrated by the fact that the Telegraph and the Daily Mail have both doubled their online readership year-on-year.

Digital editor of Telegraph Media Group Edward Roussel said: “November was a great month: doubling our traffic in a year is a great result. We are optimistic about 2008, which will be a year of innovation and significant change for the Telegraph’s digital operation.”
