Chelsea footballer Michael Essien has complained to the Press Complaints Commission over a Sunday Mirror story about his relationship with his dad.
Through his solicitors Swan Turton, the Ghanian midfielder and his mum Aba took issue with a story that suggested he had not given any financial support to his father for the past two years.
The complaint was resolved when the paper printed a clarification, headlined: ‘Michael Essien: I did support my father”. It said: ‘We have been asked by Michael and his mother Aba to point out that the whole story was not told about Michael and his mother’s relationship with his father and that James has received more support from Michael than he stated in the article”.
In another resolved complaint, law firm Allen & Overy complained that the London Lite free newspaper reported inaccurately that a former employee and reality TV star had won £1m in a sex and race discrimination claim against it.
Shazia Wahab, who appeared in BBC1’s The Apprentice last year had made complaints on race and sex discrimination grounds, but they were not upheld by the Employment Tribunal. One of six complaints of victimisation was upheld though the tribunal did not award any damages. She agreed terms to end the complaint separately with the firm.
