Former Press Gazette editor Philippa Kennedy has been appointed an OBE in the Queen’s birthday honours list. Kennedy, who remains as a consultant editor with Press Gazette for its awards events, stepped down as editor last year. She was formerly a columnist with the Daily Express, having previously been its news editor – the first woman to hold that post on a national tabloid newspaper. A product of the renowned IPC training scheme, Kennedy spent nine years with The Sun in the 70s and 80s.
“It just came out of the blue,” said Kennedy of hearing about the award. “I’m of course absolutely delighted. I don’t think I deserve it any more than any other hard working journalist in the industry, but I’m thrilled to accept it with the greatest of pleasure.”
Her husband John is already an OBE.
