Not even the arrival of his first-born could keep one sports reporter from covering boxing history being made in his newspaper’s back yard.
South London Press boxing correspondent and deputy sports editor Richard Cawley last week masterminded nine pages of reports on local hero David Haye’s victory over Enzo Maccarinelli – while off work on paternity leave.
It was 27-year-old Haye’s first fight in London – and took place at Greenwich’s O2 Arena, yards away from where he was raised. Cawley had unrivalled access to Haye, his family and team, thanks to having covered his career since he was a young, up-and-coming talent.
Cawley’s wife Nikki gave birth to Oliver on 9 February.
