The Times has today published the obituary of newspaper executive Bill Soutar, who died on 6 December 2008, aged 88.
William Richard Soutar began his 53-year journalism career as a messenger boy at the Daily Mirror in 1934 before working his way up through the ranks to become picture editor, art editor and executive editor.
He served with the Gurkhas in the Second World War, where he fought in Palestine and North Africa, as well as serving on the 49th Division newspaper, Polar News, in the British Army of occupation in Germany.
His army discharge papers praised his ‘definite flair for news and keen appreciation of news value.”
