The Daily Star saw its circulation fall 14.7 per cent in May, according to the latest ABC figures, while the Mail on Sunday was the only national that didn’t go down in numbers.
The only other national title that had a worse performance was Scotland’s Sunday Herald – despite becoming the first newspaper to identify Ryan Giggs as the footballer at the centre of a privacy row, circulation still fell 23.6 per cent.
The only paper that saw an increase in circulation year on year last month – albeit one of just 0.01 per cent – was the Mail on Sunday.
The Star’s sister title the Daily Star Sunday saw a 14.3 per cent drop.
Print circulation of The Observer was hit by a 13.9 per cent fall and The Guardian was down 12.5 per cent.
The Daily Mail put in the strongest daily performance with a circulation drop of only 1.6 per cent.
Year on year comparisons on some titles are believed to have been hit by the fact that this time last year sales were boosted by coverage of the general election.
