Mercury to woo blues and greens

By Press Gazette

By Sarah Lagan

The Leicester Mercury’s weekly standalone sports title is breaking
new ground as part of its relaunch by publishing two front pages to
appeal to more sporting fans across the county.

The Sporting Blue, which reflects Leicester City FC’s colours, will
now be the Sporting Green from the back page for rugby’s Leicester
Tigers.

The rugby content has been expanded to include more
Tigers coverage, national league rugby, rugby comment and new local
rugby pages. Grass roots football coverage has been boosted with a
24-page local football pull-out.

The Mercury’s head of sport Gary
Sherrard said: “Leicester Tigers are the biggest rugby club in the
country, but there is a thriving scene beneath that in Leicestershire,
from the six-year-olds playing tag rugby on Sunday mornings through to
club teams of all standards, representative rugby and league fixtures,
and we feel it is important to reflect all of that activity in the
Sporting Green.”

Retailers have been encouraged to display the papers showing both blue and green covers separately.
