Views sought on extending Freedom of Information

By Press Gazette

The Campaign for Freedom of Information is holding a briefing meeting in early January to discuss the government’s consultations on extending the coverage of the Freedom of Information Act.

The Act’s scope can be extended to organisations which carry out functions of a public nature and to contractors which provide services which are a function of a public authority.

The consultation paper – the consultation itself closes on February 1 – suggested that the government was seriously considering extending the FoI Act to some such bodies, said a spokeswoman for the Campaign

Bodies which could be brought in could include academy schools, privately run prisons, PFI contractors, housing associations and Network Rail.

A spokesman for the Campaign for Freedom of Information said:: “If you think there are any bodies which should be covered by the Act and which might fall within these definitions, this is the time to let the government know.”

The briefing is being held at 2.30pm on January 9 at the Campaign’s offices at Room 111, 16 Baldwins Gardens, London EC1N 7RJ.

Those who wish to attend should contact the Campaign on 0207 831 7477.
