The News of the World has appointed the People’s chief sports columnist of seven years, Paul McCarthy, as its sports editor.
McCarthy was chief football writer for the News of the World before joining the Daily Express in 1996.
He said: ‘This is a huge and incredibly exciting challenge. The reputation of the News of the World is immense and I’m very much aware of maintaining the high standards set by Mike Dunn and the rest of the sports desk team. It is a privilege to be given this opportunity.”
News of the World editor Colin Myler added: ‘Paul has one of the most respected reputations in sports journalism. His contacts book is unrivalled. Everybody knows him and everybody likes him. However, the News of the World might change that.”
McCarthy is due to begin his new role in early August.
