Mag ABCs: Glamour keeps top spot in declining women’s monthly market

By Press Gazette

Glamour retained its position at the top of the women’s monthly
market as all its competitors suffered year-on-year declines – despite
recent drastic overhauls.

The Conde Nast title was up by 0.4 per
cent to 588,539. Natmags’ Cosmopolitan, now in its 35th year suffered a
small decline of 1.3 per cent year on year to 455,649.
IPC’s Marie Claire, which had an extensive redesign last year, suffered
a steep decline of 9.9 per cent year on year to 334,729.

Both Natmags’ Company and Emap’s NW (New Woman) were down too – Company
by 6.8 per cent to 264,095 and NW, relaunched in December, by 3.9 per
cent to 222,076.

The biggest gains in women’s lifestyle were for two
distinctive products – further evidence of the need to innovate in the
sector. Emap’s “shoes and news” weekly Grazia went up 23.1 per cent
year on year to 210,200 while Hachette’s Psychologies, its’ monthly
focusing on spiritual and mental well being, was up 20.2 per cent year
on year to 115,398.

In the mature end of the monthly women’s
market Good Housekeeping remained the top title with circulation of
463,645 – a decline of 1.1 per cent. Emap’s Yours was down over 9 per
cent to 383,577 while IPC’s Woman & Home over 5 per cent to
316,034.

Hachette’s Red remained the market leader in the
thirty-somethings niche with sales of 224, 072, up 2 per cent. Conde
Nast’s Easy Living – marketed at fortysomethings – also saw a increase
in sales year on year by 9.9 per cent year to 200,116. The publisher
has had a particularly strong ABCs with all titles showing year on year
increases.
