What happens to editors of national papers once they’ve left the fold, you might well ask?
Many go on to be columnists for the papers they once edited, or some switch sides. Take Martin Newland for example, who was for a brief time at the Daily Telegraph. On most Sundays, you can find his picture byline adorning some or other article in The Observer.
“Muscles†Newland, who doesn’t have a fulltime job, has been trying his hand as a karate teacher to fill his day. But Axegrinder is able to disclose that behind all this lies another secret ambition ‒ he harbours to become a Tory MP. I understand that so far those involved in the selection process have told him to go away. Not a bad idea, I say.
