Readers of the Carmarthen Journal have helped the paper hit a £29,000 fund-raising target in six months.
The Coed Tregib appeal – run jointly with the Woodland Trust – was launched to help buy 32 acres of farmland in Llandeilo, east Carmarthenshire.
It was launched in January with a 30 June deadline.
The land, in the Tywi Valley, will be used to extend the 69-acre Woodland Trust-owned Coed Tregib (Tregib Wood) to boost biodiversity and tourism.
Carmarthen Journal editor David Hardy, said of the long-term nature of the project: “It’s a deal we’ve made for our children and their children and, of course, the planet.
“On that basis, it is a tougher test of our generosity, but Carmarthen Journal readers have passed this examination with flying colours.
Raising the £29,000 in just six months has been an absolutely fantastic achievement.”
