There is strong speculation in Dublin that Associated Newspapers is about to launch a free Metro in the next six to eight weeks.
Reports say the Irish Times has had discussions with Associated on
the project. It is uncertain whether the Irish Times would take a
shareholding as a full joint venture partner in the enterprise or
simply print the new paper at its printing press in Citywest.
With the expansion of its plant the Times would be able to print Metro as well as its own daily title.
It
is expected that Independent News and Media would be quick to react to
the new venture given that its newspaper, the Evening Herald, would be
directly affected.
As the Metro would be available to commuters
on their way to work, it would compete with the Herald, which goes on
sale mid-morning.
Associated Newspapers has invested heavily in Ireland on Sunday which has seen dramatic increases in its circulation.
