Gazette challenge

By Press Gazette

A new weekly paper is being launched in the Western Isles on Friday. The Stornoway-published Hebridean is a rival to the Stornoway Gazette.

Hebridean editor Peter Urpeth is a former editor of the Gazette. Chief reporter of the new tabloid is Iain Maciver, who has run a freelance business in the Western Isles. The third member of the editorial staff is Eric Mackinnon, who has been freelancing in central Scotland.

The paper’s designer is Stuart Groundsell, who has moved to Stornoway from London, where he has worked for various publications including The Independent and GQ.

The new weekly is being financed by four local men, including BBC Gaelic broadcaster Kenny MacIver, who is also a former editor of the Stornoway Gazette.
