Formula One race magazine owner loses libel appeal

Business F1 magazine and Tom Rubython, its owner and editor, have lost an appeal against libel damages of £75,000 awarded against them in a case brought by Tony Purnell, the former chief of the Jaguar Formula One team. They had appealed on the basis that the jury which awarded the damages should have been directed not to include any element for vindication when deciding the total. The case arose from an article in April 2005 headlined “Purnell bribed top journalist to puff achievements”.
