Felix Dennis wins BSME special achievement award

By Rachael Gallagher

Dennis Publishing founder Felix Dennis was presented the Mark Boxer Award at the British Society of Magazine Editors Awards last night for his contribution to the magazine industry.

Dennis was presented the award at the London Hilton Hotel by comedian Ronnie Corbett, and told the audience of editors: “The strange thing about editors is that I’ve always sort of loved them and hated them at the same time – and I’ve fired a lot of them. But it’s the editors in the end who made me all the money.”

The Mark Boxer Award is presented to an individual who, in the opinion of the BSME committee, has made an outstanding editorial contribution to magazines in this country.

Veteran TV presenter and entertainer Bruce Forsyth presented the editors’ editor award to Grazia’s Jane Bruton – on whom he then demonstrated some tango moves.

Other winners on the night included Phil Hilton, editor of free weekly men’s magazine Shortlist, who picked up the award for launch of the year.

New editor of the year went to former art director Tony Chambers of Wallpaper, who also picked up three awards for his magazine at the Press Gazette Magazine Design and Journalism Awards on Monday night.

Danny Rogers of PR Week was awarded the prize for weekly business and professional magazine – in a year that has seen the title produce a number of government exclusives that have been followed up by the nationals.

Ali Hall of IPC Media’s £18m launch, Look, scooped the award for weekly or fortnightly women’s magazine, with the judges commending the title for its ‘innovation and dedication and ability to find its own voice in a competitive market”.

Rachel Downey of Nursing Times beat competition from Computeractive, Chemist & Druggist, Time Out and Building to win campaign of the year.

The judges said that the magazine’s campaign – Time Out for Training – raised awareness of the negative impact of cuts to nurse training and ‘achieved all its objectives”.
