The Sunday Express business desk is to write for the Daily Star Sunday, writes Jean Morgan.
The decision, agreed by Sunday Express business editor David Parsley, explains the recent recruitment of three staff to his desk. One of them, Megan Davies, it has already been announced, will work a split week between the Daily Express and the Sunday Express.
Now the extra work entailed in writing for two Sunday papers explains the sudden loosening of Express Newspapers boss Richard Desmond’s purse strings for editorial staff.
Desmond’s investment will be stretched even further when he launches his London evening paper, not expected to be on the streets before April or May.
Speculation is rife over who the editor will be. Internal candidates for the shortlist could include the deputy editors of the Daily and Sunday Expresses – Nicola Briggs and Andy Bull respectively.
Desmond is believed to have taken the first steps in pursuing legal action against Lord Black after the Telegraph Group chairman’s remarks in The Daily Telegraph about Northern & Shell’s financial status and its executives. Black is already suing Desmond over a story in the Media Uncovered pages of the Sunday Express about the state of his company’s finances.
