Digital ABCs: Mail Online hits new high of 11.8m daily browsers, Metro fastest growing newspaper website

By Dominic Ponsford

Mail Online attracted a record global average of 11.8m global website browsers a day in January, up 47.5 per cent year on year.

This was more than double the next most popular UK newspaper website, The Guardian, which attracted just over 5m unique browsers a day according to ABC (which measures the number of different devices accessing sites).

Metro was by far the fastest growing website, up 304 per cent year on year to just over 1m unique browsers a day. The site was relaunched in November 2012 with a  ‘responsive design’ format targeting smartphone readers.

The Telegraph, which has been behind a metered paywall since April last year, was the slowest growing website audited by ABC.

The Sunday Times was the title with the best-selling tablet edition (as audited by ABC).
