Council solicitor wins libel action

By Press Gazette

A Bedford Borough Council solicitor has won a Court of Appeal battle for damages in a libel action over allegations that his actions following the 2000 council elections were “grossly incompetent”.

In an unusual libel battle, which centred on the complexities of election law, the Appeal Court overturned a High Court ruling last March that statements Michael Gough objected to, including some published in Bedfordshire on Sunday, were justified.

Gough will now receive damages to be assessed.
